No player in Bears history has been as dominant as running back Walter Payton. In fact, despite retiring in 1987, Payton remains Chicago’s all-time rushing leader with 16,726 career yards. For comparison sake, Matt Forte is second all-time with 8,602 yards. Payton recorded a franchise-best 110 rushing touchdowns, 65 more than Forte and 59 better than Neal Anderson, who is second in franchise history.
Payton was drafted by the Bears with the fourth overall pick in the 1975 NFL draft and played his entire 13-year career with the team. He was named league MVP in 1977 after recording a career-high 1,852 rushing yards and a league-best 14 rushing touchdowns. Payton was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993, and passed away in 1999 at the age of 45.
